WASHINGTON D.C. — Contrary to the blowouts in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament, the quarterfinals round brought a plethora of close games to the Verizon Center.
The Spartans were one of four teams unable to advance to the semifinals round. MSU. Along with the other Big Ten schools on the verge on a NCAA Tournament berth, will await the rest of its postseason fate on Sunday.
Here's how day three of the Big Ten Tournament shook out:

No. 8-seeded Michigan stunned No. 1 Purdue in overtime, 74-70. Junior forward D.J. Wilson scored 26 for the Wolverines. Sophomore forward Caleb Swanigan fouled out for Purdue and has held to 13 points. Stepping up in Swanigan's place was Isaac Haas and Carsen Edwards, who each scored 17. Edwards fouled out in overtime while crossing up Derrick Walton Jr.

No. 4 Minnesota overtook No. 5 MSU for the first time this season, 63-58. The Spartans had won both matchups. Despite 20 points and a collection of highlight-reel dunks from freshman forward Miles Bridges, MSU fell short as Minnesota held the Spartans to 32.8 percent from the field.

No. 2 Wisconsin disposed of No. 10 Indiana, 70-60. The Hoosiers trailed the Badgers by six points at halftime and came within four with 1:21 to play. Indiana guard James Blackmon Jr. scored a game-high 17 and was one of four Hoosiers to finish in double-figure scoring. Wisconsin countered with 16 from Bronson Koenig while Wisconsin's defense forced 12 turnovers.

No. 6 Northwestern defeated No. 3 Maryland, 72-64. Melo Trimble scored 20 and Kevin Huerter added 19 for the Terrapins, but they were unable to stop Vic Law and Scotti Lindsey, who combined for 34 points. Two more Wildcats scored in double figures, as two big scoring runs helped the Wildcats advance.

- No. 8 Michigan will play No. 4 Minnesota at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS.
