On Thursday night, ASMSU met with the general assembly. During this meeting, the association passed five new bills. Here is the breakdown of the five bills and what each means for MSU students.

1. Bill 53-14 Junior 500 Race
This bill will allocate $1,000 to sponsor the upcoming Race for Ele’s Place. According to the bill, Lambda Chi Alpha is hosting a Race for Ele’s Place event as a fundraiser for Ele's Place. At last year's philanthropy event for the organization, Lamba Chi Alpha helped raise more than $15,000 from more than 1,000 donors.
The $1,000 donation from ASMSU as passed in bill 53-14 will come from the association's general fund.
2. Bill 53-15 Greek Pledge
This bill was introduced in support of raising sexual assault awareness on campus through greek life organizations. According to the bill, ASMSU will challenge all greek organizations to compete to gain the highest number of student pledges for the It’s On Us Campaign, a national campaign to stop sexual assault. The competition will take place from Oct. 9 to Oct. 16.
The bill will provide the winning organization with $1,000 to their philanthropy and $1,000 donated in the greek organization's name toward MSU Safe Place. The combined $2,000 will be taken from the general fund.
3. Bill 53-16 Global Day of Service
ASMSU will provide $2,500 to The SPARTANS WILL. POWER Global Day of Service on Oct. 22. This annual service day can hail student, alumni, faculty and staff participants across the globe who work on volunteer projects, according to the organization's website.
The $2,500 contribution passed in this bill will be used to officially sponsor the SPARTANS WILL. POWER Global Day of Service, as stated in the bill.
4. Bill 53-17 Amend Student Rights and Responsibility
Bill 53-17 focuses on an oversight in the standing policy regarding suspended students in the Student Rights and Responsibilities document. According the this bill, suspended MSU students will not be allowed to attend any MSU affiliated events, programs or similar activities.
Revisions proposed by ASMSU include preventing suspended students from registration, class attendance or participation and residence on campus. Suspended students would also be barred from all events, programs and activities sponsored by a registered student organization.
5. Bill 53-18 Harassment and Intimidation Amendment
This bill proposed making changes to the Spartan Life Handbook. Now enacted, changes in will be made to Section 3.0 of the Handbook, which addresses harassment and intimidation in undergraduate residence halls.
According to the bill, the current language is unclear in defining sanctions for a basis of harassment and intimidation in residence halls. In addition, the bill states there are currently numerous different and diverse protocols and regulations for students living on campus. Bill 53-18 will clarify and revise this portion of the handbook.
