Department of Theatre welcomes Peking Opera Company to MSU

November 5, 2015

This Friday, the MSU Department of Theatre will host Master Qi Shu Fang along with members of the Peking Opera Company for a special performance and workshop.

Those in attendance will be shown how to do the stylized makeup, combat and acting that characterizes Peking Opera. A short selection from their version of "The Monkey King" will also be performed.

Master Qi Shu Fang and the Peking Opera Company are well known in Europe and Asia, and Fang has also performed on Broadway in the U.S. in "The Woman Generals of the Yang Family." Most of the work she has done is about cultural outreach and she was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship in 2001.

The visit to campus is a part of MSU's "Year of China" and also ties in with the Department of Theatre's devised production of "The Monkey King," which is planned to hit the stage in early December.

"Her (Master Qi Shu Fang) workshop and performance is meant to inspire our creative artists," Deric McNish, assistant professor in the Department of Theatre, said.

The production and workshop will be on Friday, Nov. 6 from noon to 1:30 p.m. and will be located in Studio 60 inside the Auditorium Building. The event is free and open to the public.
