LETTER: Voters can protect wolves from being hunted for game

October 6, 2014

Is it right that the people of Michigan do not have a say in whether or not the wolves in their state be allowed to be hunted for game? Is it appropriate that the group who does have the power in this decision be a non-scientific, politically appointed commission? The answer to both of these questions is NO. Michigan residents should be allowed to have their voices heard, and these wolves have a right to be protected by the people.

In Michigan, there are fewer than 650 wolves, who were removed from the federal Endangered Species List in 2012. Wolves who cause problems are already managed and controlled by existing methods. For example, it is already legal in Michigan to kill wolves when they threaten livestock or pets, or if there are concerns about human safety. Thus, there is no scientific basis to have a trophy hunt for wolves.

Moreover, power belongs in the hands of the people. On  November 4 , all should vote NO on proposals 1 and 2 if justice is to be restored.
