Simon announces MSU will aim to improve its handling of sexual violence on campus this fall

September 2, 2014

MSU said it will aim improve its Sexual Harassment Policy and expand its 2004 Task Force on Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence this fall semester.

MSU president Lou Anna K. Simon said in an email sent to the student community Tuesday morning that MSU is working on improving campus safety, especially in regards to sexual violence.

The extra efforts have especially been added because the university is undergoing a federal investigation by the U.S. Office of Civil Rights for its handling of sexual assault allegations. MSU is one of more than 70 universities being investigated.

Simon said this year marks the 20th year of having the MSU Safe Place program on campus. The program aims to combat relationship violence and stalking.

She encouraged students not to be “passive observers.” She said they are expected engage in promoting campus safety and help put an end to sexual assault, racism and bullying on campus.
