Update, Friday 3:15 p.m.: In regards to the water reported in East Shaw Hall, assistant director of communications in the Residence Education and Housing Services Ashley Chaney clarified instead of a tampered sprinkler head, “a pipe burst in the hallway,” and that is the source of the water.
While the staff are still not sure if the pipe had been tampered with or malfunctioned, they are “inventorying every room” on the ground and terrace levels in order to assure the residents’ rooms are safe to reenter, Chaney said.
Chaney said everyone located on the first floor and up of East Shaw has been let back in and the dining hall is open via the doors in West Shaw. All of West Shaw is open.
As of one hour after the alarm first went off, the East Shaw living room was opened as a cooling station to residents of the hall to take shelter from the heat outside, said Chaney.
As of about 1:15 Friday, students on the terrace and first floor of East Shaw Hall were evacuated due to what appears to be a tampered sprinkler head, said Ashley Chaney, assistant director of communications in the Residence Education and Housing Services.
The Vista cafeteria in Shaw was shut down during the evacuation, supply chain management sophomore Rachel Arnesen said, who said she saw a fireman go into the kitchen when she was evacuated.
“Staff are working to get (the problem) resolved as soon as possible to get folks back into the building,” Chaney said.
While not on site, Chaney said she can confirm through updates that there is not a fire and that the staff are still looking into things now.
Chaney said everyone is okay and staff are currently going through the halls now to assess the damage.
West Shaw Hall is open, Chaney said. It should “not be long” for East Shaw Hall to be reopened to students.
“This is very annoying. I’m very frustrated right now,” Arnesen said, who was waiting on a couch in the terrace level of West Shaw wrapped only in a bathrobe.
“I might miss calculus because I have none of my stuff,” said physiology Cahlia Lanier sophomore, who was also evacuated and waiting in the terrace of West Shaw.
