The MSU College of Law Tax Clinic will providing international students throughout the semester with tax walk-in advising every Wednesday in Room 204 at the International Center.
Assistant Clinical Professor of Law Joshua Wease said the walk-in advising is usually offered throughout the year and can provide students with a quick alternative in cases where students did not know they need to file for taxes or to help them get a Taxpayer ID.
Wease said the tax clinic also offers seminars for international students in the spring semester to help them fill out their tax forms and answer any questions before the deadline of April 15, when they have to send in their forms.
He said the tax clinic also consults with international students in the spring around February and March if they need any help with taxes.
Wease said international students have to be aware of the fact that they need to turn in more forms than American students.
In addition to the 1040NR form, they need ti also submit a Form 8843, which exempts students and scholars on the F-1 or J-1 visas from day counting since they don't need to prove that they are residents.
Another issue international students need to be aware of when filing for tax is the benefits of the income tax treaty between their country and the U.S., Wease said.
The income tax treaty provides residents of foreign countries with reductions or exemptions from U.S. taxes "on certain items of income they receive from sources within the United States," according to the IRS.
Wease said the treaty is different from country to country, whereas some countries don't have a tax treaty with the U.S.
