Breslin Center was overflowing with swarms of people attending the annual Spartan Spectacular event on Sunday evening.

Spartan Spectacular started out as Party at The Union, but soon the crowd got too big for the Union, said Fred Watson, assistant director in the Department of Student Life.

Watson said the event was then moved to the Auditorium and from there, to Munn Field in 2008, when it was then dubbed Spartan Spectacular.

“We wanted to improve the number of organizations that could participate, that’s why we started getting so large,” Watson said.

He said around 350 student organizations can participate when the event is on Munn Field. This number is about half of the student organizations registered on campus.

“When we brought it into the Breslin, we can only accommodate about 230 organizations,” Watson said.

Kalli Mier, elementary education senior and member of the Rodeo Club, said it’s important to reach out to students through the event to get them interested in the group.

“I think it’s really important because we’re kind of a selective group, I feel like, so it’s good to get the word out,” Mier said.

“My freshman year I didn’t even know it existed until I went to Sparticipation,” she said.

Watson said the event, which costs around $20,000, usually gets around 12,000 student attendees when it’s held on Munn Field. This year, he expects between 8,000 and 9,000 people to attend because of the change of date and venue.

The event was supposed to take place on August 26, but it had to be rescheduled due to a thunderstorm.

Undecided freshman Alyssa Waterson said she learned about the event from her resident assistant.

Waterson said she was introduced to different organization that sounded interesting to her, including the Underwater Hockey Club and the Star Wars Club.

“It’s obscure, but it’s definitely something MSU-like because it’s such a big campus,” Waterson said.

“I would recommend people come because it’s definitely a lot of social clubs that you can get into and make friends,” she said.

Watson said Sparticipation will be followed by a pep rally, where President Lou Anna K. Simon is expected to give a speech, along with the main sports coaches. The laser show, which was supposed to follow the rally, was canceled because it could not be rescheduled.
