Poetry chalking behind Shaw hall on Wednesday

September 29, 2014

The RCAH Center for Poetry will be hosting a poetry chalking event on River Trail behind Shaw hall Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event's Facebook page and website said students are encouraged to bring their own poems to share, or they can use one of the many poems available at the event. Chalk is provided, as well as apple cider.

"You don't have to be a poet or a writer to attend," Linnea Jimison, assistant director of the Center for Poetry, said.

The Center for Poetry's website said it encourages the reading, writing, and discussion of poetry and strives to create an awareness of poetry's place and power in individuals' everyday lives.

Jimison said they expect most students to stumble upon the event rather than knowing about it prior. Even so, they usually talk to a couple hundred people.

Professional writing and RCAH senior Jenny Crakes, also a student intern for the center, said it is interesting to see what poems students choose to write on the sidewalk.

The event is "a fun way to enjoy a beautiful fall day and to connect with poetry in an artistic way," Crakes said.
