For fans, the only thing a bye week means is a long Saturday without Spartan football.
For players, it’s a chance to rest up, reload and prepare for a long stretch of games.
After No. 13 MSU’s (1-1 overall) 46-27 loss to No. 2 Oregon (2-0) overall, however, some players wish there was a game to prepare for on Saturday.
“I say the only thing worse after a loss is a bye week after a loss,” senior guard Travis Jackson said. “You just want to get back out there and correct mistakes you made.”
Jackson said the team has had a few heavy lifting sessions and some conditioning. Thursday was the first practice for the team over the week.
“We’re done with it now (the Oregon loss), we’ve moved on and all of attention is on Eastern,” he said. “They run a 3-4, sometimes they shift their linebackers down, they definitely aren’t a team we can lightly.”
Some players welcomed the rest, like sophomore cornerback Darian Hicks.
“It’s always nice to have time off,” he said. “We played a tough game Saturday, we’ve used this opportunity to go to class and get our bodies right.”
Head Coach Mark Dantonio said the team can’t control when their bye week falls, so they’ve been using it to rest and prepare for Eastern Michigan.
“I don’t worry about that because it’s something you can’t really control,” he said. “The bye week gives everyone a chance to catch their breath a little bit, and try to be a little bit more of a student.”
MSU next plays against Eastern Michigan (1-1 overall) next Saturday, Sept. 20 at Spartan Stadium.
