Alternative spring break trips a chance for students to give back

September 25, 2014

There’s an alternative way to vacation here at MSU that all Spartans can be a part of.

The program called Alternative Spartan Breaks, or ASB, gives students the opportunity to travel to many different locations in the western hemisphere and help provide services to those in need.

ASB offers weekend programs and week long programs for whatever best accommodates students.

They currently have a weekend trip planned in Detroit November 8-9. They have 20 students going to volunteer at Cass Community Social Services.

But if students want to get out of the state, they can apply for the weeklong programs over winter and spring break.

One of the programs ASB offers includes “Humanizing HIV/AIDs,” where students volunteer at facilities that house people who suffer from HIV/AIDS and have no other place to live. Students are paired with a patient of the facility and get a chance to spend time with them.

Another one of ASB’s many programs is the “Housing for Low-Income Families," where students can work together to provide housing for families who can’t afford to buy a house the traditional way. Students work on various aspects of the construction process from shingling to painting to even putting up the foundations of the house.

For students interested in participating in any of these programs, the ASB’s next information session is from 6-7 p.m. on Sept. 25 in 1234 Engineering Building.

Their last meeting is from 7-8 p.m. on Sept. 30 in 1420 Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building.

Applications for winter break trips are due October 5 and applications for spring break trips are due October 26.
