Piano professor to put on 80-minute nonstop recital

January 21, 2014

Minsoo Sohn will put his endurance to the test during an 80-minute long performance at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night in the MSU Auditorium.

Sohn, an assistant professor of piano in the College of Music, will be performing Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach. Throughout the performance, Sohn said he does not plan to take any breaks.

“The piece requires a huge amount of stamina and energy,” Sohn said. “It’s a very difficult thing to endure and maintain focus and motivation.”

Sohn, who has been a faculty member for three years, is an internationally known and recognized artist, said Deborah Moriarty, a professor of piano and chair of the piano area.

The New York Times named Sohn’s recording of the Goldberg Variations one of the top classical recordings of 2011. He also won the 2006 Honens International Piano Competition.

Moriarty said Sohn saw success in several musical competitions, but said she believes the musician was happy to settle down in East Lansing.

“I think now he is glad he’s not competing anymore … and be able to work and have the freedom as an artist in a place where it’s not so hectic,” she said.

James Forger, dean of the College of Music, said he considers Sohn to be one of the most promising and talented concert pianists on the stage.

“His level of expertise in his field and his significant accomplishments are great assets to Michigan State University and to the world of music,” he said.

Sohn is excited for the opportunity to play as well.

“This is my first solo recital in the Fairchild Theatre,” Sohn said. “I’m looking forward to it and it will be one of the best concerts I’ve ever experienced,” he said.

The show will start at 7:30 p.m. at Fairchild Theatre in the Auditorium. The event will be open to the public with ?tickets sold at $10 for adults, ?$8 for seniors and free for students with an ID and people under 18.
