IM Sports-West open for students despite water main break reparations

January 20, 2014

Despite the temporary reparation of a water main break in IM Sports-West, the building’s system will not return to normal until later this week, officials say.

After the old water main burst from an undetermined cause on Wednesday morning, crews from Infrastructure Planning and Facilities worked to install a temporary line to continue water operations, IM Sports-West Facility Director Joel Eddy said.

The sports facility has been operating on the temporary water line since Thursday evening.

The burst water main is located in an unexcavated portion of the sports facilities, and rather than repair it, crews decided to implement a new one. The old water main had been in service since 1958, Eddy said.

Showers and toilets currently are functional, but drinking fountains remain shut off.

To compensate, the university is offering free water bottles at the main entrance and service counter.

“To have the system up as quickly as they did is remarkable,” Eddy said.
