With the holiday season just around the corner, individuals and organizations are keener on reaching out to give a helping hand to the less fortunate, including MSU’s Impact 89FM.
Impact 89FM is assisting with the Socks for Lansing project, initiated by the Rizzi Family of Businesses, to collect brand new unwrapped socks for donation.
“The main emphasis of this is that socks get overlooked when people donate to shelters,” Impact 89FM Events and Traffic Director Makenzie McNeill said.
McNeill said the radio station has been wanting to have more community outreach and were trying to get more involved in the community.
She said the radio station is promoting for the project through social media outlets, which is how McNeill learned about the campaign in the first place.
The project is aimed at collecting men’s, women’s and children’s socks and will be donated to the City Rescue Mission of Lansing, which is the largest shelter in the capital area.
City Rescue Mission Communications Manager Laura Grimwood said the shelter houses about 142 people per night, as recorded last year.
Grimwood said the group behind the Socks for Lansing project contacted her asking what the shelter needed the most.
Grimwood said she mentioned socks, because it is something that doesn’t come to the attention of people when donating clothing to shelters.
“In the winter time, (homeless people) are usually out looking for work and having dry socks is very important, especially here in Michigan,” Grimwood said.
President and CEO of Rizzi Family of Businesses Rochelle Rizzi said Socks for Lansing is the brain child of two of the Rizzi Designs team members, Sarah Garner and Jennifer Berggren.
“I think it’s great that we have young adults looking to help the less fortunate in the community,” Rizzi said.
Rizzi said Garner and Berggren were trying to come up with an idea for a holiday community service project.
She said she hopes to have between 500 and 1,000 socks collected for donation by Nov. 29, when the drive ends.
Mcneill said a drop off box can be found at Impact 89FM offices in G-4 Holden Hall.
