As part of their aim to expand MSU students’ music experience, Impact 89FM hosted a live-streaming event of the first YouTube Music Awards on Sunday.
The event started with Impact 89FM showing their best YouTube videos, showing local bands and artists, hosting a short trivia and giving out prizes.
Impact 89FM’s video director Colin Marshall said the event was a way to get the radio station to partner with Google, bringing different audiences together, adding that the music awards are relevant to the radio station’s goal to combine both music and video to bring students a better music experience.
“We don’t see ourselves as just a radio station,” said Station Manager Samuel Riddle, adding that Impact 89FM is more of a media outlet for students.
“Radio and YouTube aren’t necessarily competing, but you won’t find people who listen to the radio and watch music videos on YouTube all at the same time,” Riddle said, describing the partnership as somewhat unconventional.
Riddle was approached by Eric Schendel, one of the two Google campus representatives and a DJ at Impact, to host an event related to the awards show.
He said because Impact 89FM only started planning for the event about two weeks ago and didn’t have much time to advertise, they relied heavily on their Facebook page and word of mouth to promote the event.
Riddle said the event is proof enough that Impact 89FM always is open to partner with other organizations to accommodate the growing music culture at MSU.
Impact 89FM’s Flashback host Chelsea Stein said the event was good publicity for Impact 89FM.
Stein, who has been working at the station for nearly four years, said the event was good exposure since it was open for all students, though much of the audience appeared to be Impact 89FM staff members.
Attendees got to fill out a nominee ballot with their predictions of who would win certain awards. The person with the best guesses got to take home a Nexus 7 tablet.
The award categories were Artists of the Year, Video of the Year, YouTube Breakthrough, Response of the Year — including covers of hit songs — YouTube Phenomenon and YouTube Innovation.
