East Lansing is under high risk for dangerous weather this evening, with the possibility of tornadoes and hurricane-force winds from 5 to 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service said East Lansing could be hit with severe thunderstorms due to storms originating from Illinois with the potential to produce lasting 60 mph winds and tornadoes.

While the main threat currently is the damaging wind power, these storms could produce tornadoes, large hail, and flooding due to heavy downpours.

National Weather Service meteorologist Daniel Cobb said the worst of the storm should hit between 5 and 6 p.m., though conditions could become severe by 4 p.m. Severe weather should pass by 7 p.m., although gusty winds are expected throughout the night.

The weather conditions expected to hit the city have the potential to produce a tornado with 110 mph winds. These tornadoes have the potential to cause intense damage to structures, such as the destruction of roofs and the outer exteriors of buildings.

The storms also could cause scattered power outages and an increased difficulty driving, according to the National Weather Service website.

“The best advice we can give people is to just listen to the updates,” Cobb said. “Be on the website, tune in to your local stations and be prepared to take cover.”

If a tornado or funnel cloud is spotted, the National Weather Service advises individuals to take cover in the lowest floor of whatever building they are in, preferably a basement. In addition, stay within the interior rooms and avoid all windows.

Ingham County also is currently under a Flood Advisory near Sycamore Creek in Holt, Mich. Up to an inch of rainfall is expected and caution should be taken near riverbanks.
