The volleyball team dropped its first Big Ten game Thursday night against Minnesota. Now they face something they have yet to see on their schedule — a two day break in-between games.
After falling to No. 10 Minnesota Thursday on ESPN2, the Spartans (17-2 overall, 6-1 Big Ten) will enjoy a couple days off before taking on No. 15 Wisconsin (11-2 overall, 4-2 Big Ten) today.
It’s an offbeat scheduling stretch for MSU, as they’ll take on No. 16 Michigan next Wednesday, a few days after Wisconsin
“We go Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday,” said senior setter Kristen Kelsay. “Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, all of who are ranked, all of who are away except for the Michigan game. We play at Minnesota, at Wisconsin. Those are though gyms to play in. They both have really good crowds, both have really traditional programs that have had great success.”
Head coach Cathy George said the team welcomes the scheduling, as they have two days to travel between the Minnesota-Wisconsin games, and then three days to prepare for the Michigan home game.
“It gives us more time to regroup.” George said. “We had that Friday-Sunday with Ohio State and Penn State, and it does give you time to regroup and think about your next opponent. It’s just the way it goes.”
The Badgers have lost two of their last three matches to Nebraska and Penn State, who the Spartans have defeated this year. However, it would be unwise for MSU to take Wisconsin lightly.
MSU will play Wisconsin on Sunday at 2 p.m. The match will be televised on BTN.
