University officials discuss free Wi-Fi in residence halls at RHA meeting

October 2, 2013

The university is working on brining free wireless service into residence halls for students, starting with Wilson Hall this fall.

During Wednesday’s Residence Halls Association, or RHA, meeting Ray Gasser, senior associate director for the Residence Education and Housing Services, or REHS, said the organization is working on educating residents of Wilson Hall not to use routers in their rooms since the additional routers distort the connection.

“Every other room is equipped with a router, but the connection overlaps,” Gasser said. “The initial plan is to have all residence halls equipped with wireless within the coming three years.”

Gasser said the first buildings getting the wireless service will be the halls that are undergoing renovations, which are Landon and Butterfield Halls. The university is expected to approve an estimate of the costs for the wireless service by the end of October. The final approval of the university on the costs is expected to be in January 2014.

Installing the service will typically take place during the summer, Gasser said. Depending on the availability of funds, the service could be applied to more than the two halls being renovated.

The halls which would be following are the housing, living and learning communities, including Holmes and Case Halls, closely followed by Snyder and Phillips Halls.
