ASMSU to advocate against arson in community

September 26, 2013

ASMSU’s Policy Commitee passed a bill that would allow the undergraduate student government to advocate against arson in the East Lansing and MSU community.

The bill said the East Lansing Police Department has been getting a high rate of reports on arson in the East Lansing area over the last two years.

“We want to eradicate the idea that arson is part of our culture,” said K.C. Perlberg, policy committee chair and music education and political theory senior.

Perlberg said city council had decided to set the abatement period — when students or residents need to get rid of their bulk trash outside of their homes — at four hours to avoid higher rates of arson.

Mitch Treadwell, environmental and plant biology senior, said based on his personal research he found there were, on average, 50 arson incidents reported across six months.

Perlberg said there was not a concrete plan of how they will advocate against arson, but they will be working with ASMSU Special Projects to set the agenda for plans.

“We also want to work together with other student organizations and the Celebration Commitee, including RHA and UAB, to make sure we spread the word and make sure that we celebrate the right way,” Perlberg said.
