Little Big Town carries country themed night at Common Ground Music Festival

July 12, 2013

Moments from the country day at Common Ground on July 11, 2013. Song: “Ghosts,” by Von Grey.

The fourth night of the Common Ground Music Festival boasted the biggest crowd yet.

Prepared for a rock-oriented night featuring Little Big Town and Randy Hauser, the crowd, dressed consistently in cowboy hats and boots, jean shorts and camouflage caps, bounced beach balls, threw their hands up and filled Adado Riverfront Park.

“You see different people every night, and there’s a different feel,” Williamston resident Erica Pincumbe said. “This night is fun. It’s different from the other nights. I don’t know another word for it besides country.”

Lansing resident Joseph Scott said Thursday differed from the nights prior, a more rock-oriented one.

“Seems like more of a get drunk mellow scene than last night,” Scot said. “There are more people just trying to come around and conversate.”

Scott said the music played a role in the crowd’s attitude.

“It’s hard to head bang to some guy crying about losing his dog,” Scott said. “It’s music that touches your soul versus music that you wake up with a headache from head banging for a few hours.’

Thursday night’s acts revolved mainly around a common country music theme, and some of those acts pushed that definition.

Von Grey, a group consisting of four sisters, played the GM Pavilion to a crowd that grew as their set went on.

“We came over here to get wine and heard them,” Lansing resident Tamie Steavens said. “They’re very good.”

Her husband, Bob Steavens, said he was taken aback when he heard them by chance.

“If I knew this band was going to be here next year, I’d pay just to see them,” Bob Steavens said. “I could sit here all night listening to them.”

Von Grey blended harmonies, stomping kick drum, harpsichord, dub tempos, violin, cello, banjo and Spanish guitar, among other sounds, into an attention-grabbing one-hour set.

Fiona Von Grey attributed the range of sounds to their classical training since age five. This was followed by them forming a classical quartet, which led them into bluegrass, then country, and then folk.

Touring and recording with three of her sisters, Fiona Von Grey said it is essential they keep family problems and band problems separate, and while on tour she said “getting to see the cities, other than the music, is the best thing about playing.”

The fourth night of Common Ground proved to be promising as the fifth night transitions into an electronic theme; almost garuanteed to keep the college-crowd intrigued.
