MSU Prof wins Krieghbaum Under-40 Award

June 12, 2013

John Besley, an associate professor in MSU’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences, became the first MSU faculty member to be honored with the Krieghbaum Under-40 Award by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, or AEJMC.

The award is given to candidates who exhibit exceptional accomplishments in teaching, research and public service, and it comes along with an $1,000 cash prize and a commemorative plaque.

Besley was chosen by the selection committee from the five nominations they received this year. AEJMC Executive Director Jennifer McGill said Besley’s commendable work in teaching and research made Besley an evident choice for the award.

“The selection committee selected Dr. Besley based on his strong record of research, his teaching credentials and his public service to the association and the discipline,” McGill said.

Besley’s research interests lie in risk perception, public opinion, strategic communication and media relations, among others. According to MSU, Besley will be presented with the award Aug. 10 at the annual AEJMC conference in Washington, D.C.

“It is meant to recognize my early career achievements,” Besley said. “This award takes all of my previous work of research and teaching into account and how I am contributing to the field generally.”
