On Friday, 47-year-old East Lansing resident Robert Miller was charged with one felony count of embezzlement from the Pinecrest Elementary Parent Teacher Council, or PTC. At the time, Miller was treasurer on the council and upon investigation was found to have embezzled more than $7,700 over the past year, according to East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth.
“We just did a criminal investigation and the money was missing so we started digging into bank records,” Wriggelsworth said. “There was a lot of irregularities and he was in charge of the money … it comes to charging the officer with taking the money when you can’t account for it all.”
ELPD began to check into the matter when Miller resigned and failed to provide full records to the PTC. He has returned about $6,500 of the $7,700 originally stolen.
His wife, Kimberly Miller, turned herself in on Friday for stealing cash from one of the fundraisers. She will be arraigned on a charge of felony larceny within the next 10 days.
“The money is raised through kids and fundraisers,” Wriggelsworth said. “It’s used directly for the school so we’re hoping they pay back they money or are forced to.”
