Lumberjacking event Saturday

April 4, 2013

On Saturday, a more traditional sporting event will take place in Mason, Mich. — lumberjacking. From 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., MSU will host the Midwest Qualifier for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series, a lumberjack competition for collegiate and professional athletes at Ingham County Fairgrounds.

The competition will involve eight competitors in the Professional Series and 11 schools in the Collegiate Series, including a student from MSU. The collegiate portion of the qualifier will be broadcast on the Outdoor Channel on Sunday, April 21 at 3 p.m. It will also broadcast on ESPNU at an unannounced date.

“The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series is the longest running show on ESPN other than SportsCenter,” Brad Sorgen, producer of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series said. “This is actually the 28th season of the professional event. This is the 10th season for the collegiate events.”

The Collegiate Series includes four disciplines — underhand chop, the single buck chop, the standing block and the stock saw. The student who accumulates the most points will receive a $1,000 scholarship from STIHL and advance to the 2013 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship.

“The lumberjack sport history has been around for hundreds of years,” Sorgen said. “It’s not as popular as your old stick-and-ball stuff — baseball, basketball, football. It’s very much an important sport for a lot of folk in different regions around the country.”

The 2013 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship will take place in Pigeon Forge, Tenn forge tn&aq=0&sugexp=chrome,mod=19&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl.
