ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, will be looking to raise the student tax for the fall 2013 semester to help improve evening transportation safety for students.
A bill raising the ASMSU student tax from $18 to $18.50 per student per semester passed at the committee meeting unanimously, with creating a safe ride program in mind.
The safe ride program would give ASMSU taxpaying students the opportunity to get one free ride to their residence each night — but only to their residence, either on or off campus — making it different from a typical taxi system, Vice President of Finance and Operations Kyle Clifton said.
Clifton said other Big Ten schools already offer similar programs.
The bill will be voted on at the next ASMSU general assembly meeting on March 14, with the general assembly members needing to pass it for the program to be created.
If passed, the program will begin next fall with the tax being implemented in the fall of 2013.
