Report: Whitmer won't run for governor in 2014

January 30, 2013

State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing, told supporters today she will not be running for governor in 2014.

Whitmer, the state’s Senate Minority leader, made the announcement via email that she will not be running against incumbent Gov. Rick Snyder, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Although she was confident she could win the election, Whitmer said she had to think of what was best for her 9 and 10-year-old daughters.

In 2010, she filed papers to run for Attorney General but backed out of the race. Her letter did not rule out running for other state positions in 2014.
