Dorm fitness centers begin opening Friday

January 30, 2013

Paul Manson, Residence Education and Hospitality Services, or REHS, assistant director for facilities, announced the opening of all the neighborhood fitness centers, with exception for Holmes and Yakeley halls, no later than 8 a.m. Friday.

Manson said the flooring for both Holmes and Yakeley halls’ fitness centers is being completed this weekend, and both centers are expected to be ready sometime next week.

The State News reported Monday, the fitness centers were reopening in the upcoming week, but REHS Assistant Director of Communications Ashley Chaney previously was unable to guarantee the exact opening dates.

The fitness centers will be similar to hotel exercise rooms with cardio-type equipment. REHS will continue to add equipment to the fitness center as equipment is updated.

“The big thing I want people to realize is that I have more equipment to deploy so as we move on, we will continue to add more and more equipment,” Manson said at Wednesday night’s Residence Hall Association, or RHA, meeting.

The fitness centers will be open 24 hours a day, but the details for students getting into other buildings where they don’t live in their neighborhood after midnight are still being worked out, Manson said.

Neighborhood fitness centers will be located in Rather, Bailey, Akers, Hubbard, Holmes, Snyder-Phillips, Yakeley, Shaw and Holden halls, as well as Spartan Village. The fitness center in Butterfield Hall also will be remodeled when building renovations begin in May.

RHA President Kelcey Gapske said she is excited about the openings and about what the fitness centers have to offer to the MSU on-campus student body.

“I think its great. Honestly, it’s been a long time coming,” Gapske said. “The residents have been waiting, really wanting some type of fitness center, some type of way to exercise, and I think starting with a cardio room is good to make sure they are safe.”
