The name says it all: Sparticipation, where students begin to participate in various MSU organizations and groups.

Varying from fraternities and sororities to the MSU Gospel Choir and the Student Greenhouse Project, Sparticipation offered the chance for MSU students to find their niche.

“We’re here sharing the Spartan love,” Communication Manager for Auxiliary Resources Kat Cooper said. “It’s about starting to learn what it means to be a Spartan.”

Sparticipation is run by the Department of Student Life and is an annual event during Welcome Week that ran from 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Sparticipation featured hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken breasts, among various dining options provided by MSU Culinary Services.

The Department of Student Life sends out an email to organizations, asking if they’d like a booth at the upcoming Sparticipation, with a first-come, first-serve process.

Human Resources Manager for Auxiliary Resources Carol Noud, who was handing out T-shirts with Cooper, said the event was a great opportunity for students to learn about the variety of organizations on campus.

“It’s a beautiful day to be outside and pick up info and plenty of freebies,” Noud said.

The event included a wide variety of music, as well as live music from Jedi Mind Trip.

Among the organizations using Sparticipation to gain exposure was Camp Casey, a nonprofit that gives children with cancer the opportunity to use horseback riding to take their minds off their illness. It was the first time Camp Casey was at Sparticipation, and Public Relations Chairwoman Caitlyn Melamed said the group was excited to be there.

“We want to raise awareness to get as many MSU students involved to raise more money for the program.”

Chemical engineering junior Whitney Benson said Sparticipation has become an event that many attend as part of MSU’s Welcome Week traditions.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Benson said. “But (it) gets you out there and gives you an opportunity to learn about groups.”
