It’s out with the old and in with the new as construction at Wells Hall is expected to be mostly complete toward the end of May.

Contractors currently are working on the interior of the Wells Hall addition by commissioning the heating and ventilation systems, university engineer Bob Nestle said.

Workers began the initial work on the interior in November 2011 after the exterior’s completion. The project is budgeted for $38 million.

Looking ahead, Nestle said a transition will begin to move the contents of Morrill Hall to the new space at Wells Hall. Morrill Hall is slated to be demolished early next year.

The red-bricked, iconic building on the north side of campus has been cited for several infrastructure faults because of its 100-plus-years.

“The primary issue in Morrill Hall is that it is a wood frame structure, and it cannot support the weight that is typical for the modern classroom, office building,” Nestle said.

Although student teams designed several commemoration spaces at the Morrill Hall site, no commitment has yet been made, Nestle said.
