Weekend roundup: Oct. 14-16

October 13, 2011

It is almost the weekend. Classes are ending, and students are ready to unwind. Here is a roundup of events to attend during the weekend respite.

Burton’s Garden show:

Upcoming band Burton’s Garden will be performing at 8 p.m. Friday at Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing.

The concert will feature music from a range of genres including rock, reggae, blues and funk. The band promises a night of high-energy rock to “bring the fun back in funk.”

Audience members must be 18 and older. Tickets to the show cost $10.

“Do Ask, Do Tell” dance:

To celebrate National Coming Out Day, which took place Oct. 11, MSU organization Respecting Individuals on Neutral Grounds is hosting the “Do Ask, Do Tell” dance from 8-11 p.m. Friday at Williams Great Hall.

This military-themed event celebrates the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Law in which members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the military were forced to keep their sexual orientation a secret.

The cost to attend the dance is free.

Musique 21 concert:

The MSU College of Music presents a performance by Musique 21, a contemporary music ensemble composed of both students and faculty within the college.

The free concert will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in Music Building Auditorium.

The group will be playing pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries, exhibiting unique instrumentation and timbres from the era.

Women’s Expo:

An event celebrating women of all ages and walks of life will be held this weekend from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Demmer Center, 3365 E. Jolly Road, in Lansing.

This free event will feature workshops and classes, as well as activities including archery and firearms workshops, safety briefings, recipe collections, and jewelry booths.

Attendees also can meet the MSU Archery Team.

Delta Chi Car Smash for the Cure:

MSU’s chapter of Delta Chi will be hosting a charity car smash from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at their fraternity house, 101 Woodmere Ave.

For one dollar a hit, participants can test their strength or relieve some aggression — for a cause — by attempting to smash an old car provided by the fraternity. Proceeds from the event will go to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

During the car-smashing event, the fraternity will host a tailgate to celebrate Saturday’s MSU vs. University of Michigan game by featuring a mechanical bull and prizes for attendees.
