MSU students’ website to sponsor E.L. Dayglow concert

September 26, 2011

A new music website created by MSU students has been named the headline sponsor of the sold-out Dayglow Invades East Lansing concert.

WayUpHere.com, which launched during Labor Day weekend, brings together the best aspects of other popular music blogs, co-founder and finance senior Drew Martin said.

“We used a lot of different (music) websites for different reasons,” Martin said. “We just wanted to combine them all into one site.”

The website features hip-hop and electronic music and allows visitors to download new music, create and stream playlists and allows independent artists to upload their own tracks, Martin said.

“We’re going to the exact target market we want, which is college students,” he said.

The website got a boost in publicity by being named the headline sponsor of the Dayglow Invades East Lansing concert being held on Oct. 21 at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing.

The WayUpHere.com team paid $800 to secure exclusive sponsorship of the concert, said accounting senior Ryan Reynolds, another co-founder of WayUpHere.com.

“We think (being the sponsor) is huge,” Martin said. “You look at something basic like the Facebook page for Dayglow, and 4,000 people are already connected to that.”

The concert sold out all 5,000 tickets three weeks ago, Matt Meyer, a promoter for the concert, said. Meyer is the chief financial officer of Hottest College Parties, a company that puts on concerts across the Midwest.

The Dayglow tour brands itself as “the world’s largest paint party” and hosts concerts around the country, especially near college campuses.

The music played at Dayglow might not be the biggest attraction to some people, English freshman Brandon Oyer said.

“It’s just not really my kind of music,” he said. “It sounds like a cool concert, (and) it sounds like it’s more than just about music.”

Development on the website occurred during this past summer with a team including an Indiana University student and a student from the Art Institute of Michigan.

Packaging senior Trent Lattimore said he likes that the website allows users to stream music before they download.

“It’s even cooler because it’s created by students,” Lattimore said. “They know what we want, they are us, so I think it’s a cool new idea.”

There also are social networking elements featured on the Way Up Here website, Reynolds said.
“We want to emphasize a community feel to the site. … So we have ratings and comments on every single song,” Reynolds said.

In the future, Reynolds hopes to grow the brand of the website and bring more entertainment to East Lansing, especially up-and-coming artists, he said.

“We want to bring (artists) to East Lansing and make it a destination point for artists,” Reynolds said. “They don’t really have anywhere to go. They can’t sell out a show at the Breslin (Center.)”
