With the first week of preseason camp under its belt, the MSU football team played its first jersey scrimmage Saturday at the team’s practice facilities just east of the Duffy Daugherty Football Building. Utilizing a modified scoring system so the offense and defense could be each other’s opponent, the offense pulled out a 67-63 victory.
Senior quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 17-of-28 passes for 216 yards with two touchdowns but one interception. Senior wide receiver Keshawn Martin — who had three receptions for 53 yards — and sophomore tight end Dion Sims had 11- and 10-yard touchdown receptions from Cousins, respectively.
Sophomore wide receiver Bennie Fowler led the offense with six receptions for 58 yards — with a 10-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Andrew Maxwell — while senior wide receiver B.J. Cunningham followed up with five for 55 yards.
On the defensive side, sophomore defensive end William Gholston finished with 2.5 sacks for 19 yards along with four tackles. Sophomore safety Isaiah Lewis led the defense with eight tackles, while senior safety Trenton Robinson had five and the interception from Cousins.
