After the NCAA Opening Rounds this weekend, the MSU track and field team will advance seven athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held June 8 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Competing in Bloomington, Ind., sophomore thrower Beth Rohl led the Spartans through the weekend, posting a 53.08 meter toss in the discus throw, which earned her a fourth place in the event. Senior thrower Ashley Lawrence followed up just behind Rohl with a personal best 53.01 meter throw.
For his first championship appearance, sophomore thrower Lonnie Pugh qualified in the discus throw with his sixth-place finish. During the weekend, Pugh threw a personal best toss at 55.74 meters.
Placing third in the 5,000-meter run, senior Emily MacLeod also posted a personal record by three seconds with a time of 15:57.57. MacLeod’s performance qualified her for her second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance in her Spartan career.
After qualifying during the weekend, Lawrence, MacLeod and Pugh join Rohl, freshman thrower Zack Hill, sophomore jumper Codi Mattix and freshman jumper Ashley Stacey in representing MSU in seven out of eight events at the NCAA Championships.
