Spring break solutions

March 3, 2011

It finally is time for those hours on the treadmill to pay off and the stress of midterms to subside — the sweet smell of spring break is in the air.

Friday afternoon, East Lansing will gain that ghost town-esque appeal as thousands of students escape to sunny beaches or hometowns to enjoy a school-free week of restoration.

For those concerned with filling the time or dying from boredom, there are options to have a successful break, whether you’re sunbathing in Miami or sleeping in at your parents’ house.

Be literary
Spring break is the perfect time to dive into a good book — regardless if it’s for class or not.

Some students, such as Spanish and English senior Andrea Goossens, choose to get ahead academically.

“I’m literally going home to work on these three papers I have due after spring break,” Goossens said. “And I have two exams. I have the most unfortunate spring break ever.”

Think summer
Maybe spending a week at home watching daytime television and listening to your parents nag wasn’t enough inspiration to get the body you always have wanted. No need to fret yet — summer is far enough away to get in shape for sunshine season.

Whether you have warm sand under your bare feet or UGG boots protecting you from slush and snow, there is no excuse to be sedentary for nine days. Move more and eat less — the July version of you will be grateful for it.

Summer also brings opportunities that need to be seized months beforehand — internship and job positions, as well as study abroad applications. Don’t wait until it’s too late and plan ahead.

And even if your friends are heading to warmer locations, as is the case with advertising sophomore Lukas Miller, there always is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Miller said he’s OK with hanging out in his hometown, knowing the summer will bring sun.

“I have plans to go away this summer, so I’m looking forward to that and trying to save my money,” he said.

Get pop-cultured
With jobs, classes and trips to 24-hour coffee shops, students often miss the luxury of watching their favorite shows on TV.

This spring break, utilize your days to catch up on what you’ve missed this winter season. Nearly every major cable network provides free full episodes online, and endless movies from Netflix definitely are worth the cost.

Alex Krausman, a jazz studies senior, said he’ll be dedicating some of his time to music.

“I’m going to give Radiohead’s new album a few more listens,” Krausman said. “I haven’t had a chance to give it enough time to let it really sink in.”

Reconnect
Many students would agree there are few things from high school days worth holding on to, but close friends are one of them. Spring break presents the opportunity to rehash the glory days and discuss those embarrassing memories from way back when.

Kelly Lysaght, a no-preference sophomore, said she’s excited to see familiar faces.

“I’ll definitely be catching up with friends that go to other schools that have the same spring break as us,” Lysaght said. “It’s important for me to keep in touch with my old friends.”

But reconnecting with everyone is not something Lysaght will be doing. She said spring cleaning her cyber social life will be on her to-do list next week.

“Sometimes I’ll be on Facebook, and I’ll see a person, and I have no idea who they are,” Lysaght said. “It’s just kind of useless having them on my page if I don’t know who they are, so I’ll definitely be deleting some friends (on Facebook).”

Reinvent yourself

The snow is disappearing and each day the sun is shining just a tad bit longer — March officially is here. What better time to start fresh?

Spend the cash you saved by not going to Panama City Beach, Fla., and try a new hairstyle, buy some new clothes — maybe even look into a new piercing or tattoo, if you dare.

And although some students might be like Lysaght and clean out unwanted friends on Facebook, some might want to look snazzy to the friends they actually do care about.

Post new pictures and update your tagged photos to be more relevant. It’s never too late for a mini-makeover.
