E.L. gets seven inches of snow, storm coming to end

February 21, 2011

After about seven to eight inches of snow it the Lansing area yesterday, the worst of the storm is done for now.

Nathan Jeruzal, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said about an inch of light snow can be expected this afternoon and the next few days will remain chilly with temperatures hovering around the 20s.

“Right now the heaviest snow is pretty much done for the Lansing area,” Jeruzal said.

Although yesterday there were a high number of automobile accidents — 15 alone in the span of several hours and 19 total — today has been relatively quiet on the roads, said East Lansing police Capt. Tom Johnstone.

“We’ve had a couple accidents, but it’s not bad,” Johnstone said.

Johnstone said while snow removal crews are out today keeping the roads clear, there are not as many as there would be because of the national holiday.

“You’ll see a lot more tomorrow morning,” Johnstone said. “Unfortunately, when a storm comes in with that kind of timing it costs a lot of extra money (paying workers overtime).”

Gerry Dobbs, landscape service manager for MSU, said this morning that although the main roads have been cleared, the team still has more work to do including the parking lots around campus. Clearing around began last night with snowplows and salt trucks, but clearing stopped at midnight.

“We are not quite satisfied, we’re still in the mode out here of trying to push to get everything done,” Dobbs said. “The biggest parts should be done by tomorrow morning.”

Dobbs said the most recent snow fall was heavier than the one earlier in the month because of warm air coming from the south. There also was more ice to deal with because of the warmer temperatures and melting snow the prior to the storm.
