The No. 7 MSU football team will play the No. 15 Alabama Crimson Tide in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1, MSU announced Sunday night. The game will be televised on ESPN at 1 p.m.
It is the second time in three years the Spartans (11-1) will travel to the game in Orlando.
“We congratulate Mark Dantonio, his coaching staff and the student-athletes in bringing home Michigan State’s first Big Ten football championship in 20 years,” MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said in a statement. “It certainly has created a buzz around campus, throughout the state and indeed across the country. Now, we look forward to following our Big Ten Championship team to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl against Alabama.”
Alabama (9-3) is the defending national champion and was the preseason No. 1 team.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban coached MSU from 1995-1999, before taking the head coaching job at LSU prior to MSU’s game in the Capital One Bowl, which was then known as the Citrus Bowl.
MSU head coach Mark Dantonio was an assistant coach under Saban during his time at MSU.
Two years ago, the Spartans lost to Georgia in the Capital One Bowl.
