After sustaining a C6 vertebra fracture while vaulting during practice on Wednesday, senior gymnast Kathryn Mahoney underwent surgery to stabilize the vertebra, MSU announced Thursday.
The surgery was successful, leaving MSU hopeful for her postoperative recovery.
As a major force for the Spartans, head coach Kathie Klages said she expects Mahoney’s strength and surrounding support system will help her through a speedy recovery.
“Kathryn is a strong, determined and positive individual,” Klages told MSU Athletics. “I believe these qualities will carry her through the difficult months that will follow.”
Last season, Mahoney recorded a season-high 9.850 on the floor at the NCAA Regional Championships after posting 9.800 at the Big Ten Championships.
Without Mahoney, MSU opens its season hosting No 9 Michigan, Iowa and Western Michigan on Jan. 7 at Jenison Field House.
