'Poppins' butler discusses show, touring

November 7, 2010

Dennis Moench plays the nervous and chronically overwhelmed butler, Robertson Ay, in “Disney and Cameron Mackintosh present Mary Poppins.” The State News talked with Moench about his role in the musical and his experiences being on the road for the show.

Q What’s your past experiences on Broadway?

DENNIS MOENCH When I graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, my first summer job was in New York, in “Fame.” I did that for a while — it ran for about a year. I was really lucky to get that right out of college. Then I was in “Altar Boys” in New York. It was about a Christian pop boy band — I played the Jewish member. After that, I did a tour in 2007, “All Shook Up,” for a week. I played a nerdy sidekick to Elvis.

Q Tell us about your character, Robertson Ay, in “Mary Poppins.”

DM He’s kind of the butler in the house, the “whipping boy.” He’s the lowest servant in the house and does all the grunt work. He always messes everything up that he does. I play him like he’s new to the house and doesn’t know what to do and gets flustered easily. He causes quite a catastrophe.

Q What can people expect from the musical?

DM They took the best parts of the movie and the best parts from the books, so there are big, familiar songs and it’s the same story line, but there’s a lot of twists. They wrote some great new numbers and made this story have a little more weight. The main story of the show centers around the Banks family and the hard times they’re going through.

Q What’s the touring schedule like?

DM We go all over the place. After East Lansing, we go to Des Moines, (Iowa) then Pittsburgh, then Omaha, (Neb.). We literally went from Tempe, Ariz., where we were in the desert, to Denver, in the cold mountains, in a matter of days.

Q Can MSU students appreciate the musical?

It’s kind of important to let college students know that it’s something that they would really enjoy. I’ve been to East Lansing before, I love it — it’s such a college town. You might think, ‘It’s Mary Poppins, it’s just for kids.’ But it’s something that really touches every age group. It’s something everyone grew up watching.
