Current election results show state Rep. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing, holds a solid lead over Republican challenger Susan McGillicuddy, with 63 percent of the vote and 74 percent of precincts reporting.
State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing, also is leading GOP candidate Kyle Haubrich, with 63 percent of the vote and 51 percent of precincts reporting.

“It was a fight worth fighting, my friends,” Bernero says. “It was a good fight, but it was not our time.”

Bernero is expected to take the stage at his party in Detroit at any minute. Supporters are gathering near the front of the ballroom.

Michigan proposal 10-2 — which would ban felons from holding office — is slated to pass by a four to one margin with 7 percent of precincts reporting.

About 68 percent of voters have turned down Mich. Proposal 10-1 to hold a convention to rewrite the state constitution, according to Ingham County officials.

In East Lansing districts, Democrat trustee candidates Colleen McNamara and Dennis Denno are winning by large margins. Statewide, it is the opposite.

Despite somber mood in the ballroom at Bernero’s party in Detroit, about 200 people eagerly await the candidate’s entrance.

The Associated Press has projected GOP candidate Rick Snyder as the winner. With 11 percent of precincts reporting, Snyder is at 64 percent.

Some media outlets report Bernero will concede, but Bernero spokeswoman Andrea Fischer says he is waiting for the numbers before making a decision.

Associated Press reports Mike Rogers has 72.4% of 8th district votes with 2% precincts reporting.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has just finished addressing the crowd at Bernero’s watch party, State News staff writers on the scene report.
“You know if this guy is in your corner, you can bet on him,” Bing said to an applauding crowd.

Polls in western portion of Upper Peninsula have closed. With 4 percent of precincts reporting, Snyder holds 64 percent of vote. Bernero has 33 percent.
Media outlets throughout the state have projected Snyder as the gubernatorial winner, although no official announcement has been made.

MSU Trustee Colleen McNamara, a Democrat, says she understands this is a Republican year and a win will be pulled out by her with a little luck.

Staff writer Megan Durisin reports that Bernero’s dad has shown up at the candidate’s watch party in Detroit.
Update 8:38 p.m.
Reporter on scene at Snyder’s watch party says Snyder is in the building but is not with crowd at party. Snyder expected to show up, but not for an hour or so.

Still no results. Max Rohtbart, an intern with the Snyder campaign, said at Snyder’s watch party that he’s confident Snyder has already won the race and will be buying his inauguration tickets tomorrow.

Some Michigan news outlets have called the race in favor of Snyder, although polls closed 10 minutes ago. No precincts reporting and no official results have been posted.
From Bernero watch party: Attorney General candidate David Leyton recently arrived at the party and said negative campaign ads have been detrimental this campaigning season.
“The problem with negative campaign ads is that it stifles debate and the people of Michigan are the ones who suffer from that,” Leyton said.
Update 8:06 p.m.
State News staff writer Megan Durisin says about 50 people have arrived at the Virg Bernero election watch party at the MGM Grand hotel in Detroit.
Despite low expectations for Democratic Party results, Bernero supporters are optimistic, saying Detroit is a key player in the election turnout.
Novi resident Sharon Oliver-Merchant got up early this morning to vote.
“We need a change and with the team he’s going to have with Mayor (Brenda) Lawrence, with her track record, they should enhance (the state) and keep things going,” Oliver-Merchant said.

Polls in East Lansing and across the state closed at 8 p.m. Some polls in the Upper Peninsula remain open because they are in a different time zone.
