Field hockey splits weekend

September 19, 2010

The No. 5 MSU field hockey team had its season-opening undefeated streak broken this weekend at the Golden Flash Invitational in Kent, Ohio. In the team’s first game of the weekend Friday, the Spartans fell to Kent State, 2-0.

Despite outshooting the Golden Flashes 17-12, the Spartans were unable to get the ball past Kent State’s goalkeeper. MSU also had six penalty corners compared to Kent State’s five, but still were unable to capitalize on any of those scoring opportunities.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Molly Cassidy made a total of six saves on the game, and senior forward Jantine Steinmetz led the Spartans with five shots.

The Spartans regrouped after their loss to take down No. 13 Boston University, 6-1. MSU had a different scorer for all six goals, demonstrating the team’s depth. Steinmetz assisted the second, third and fourth goals before putting in the fifth goal herself.

Other scorers included seniors midfielder Amanda Huck and forward Camille Dagorn, freshman midfielder Katherine Jamieson, redshirt freshman forward Elizabeth Helffrich and sophomore forward Jessica Lindner.

Despite posting so many goals, the Terriers outshot the Spartans 17-8, and they also had 10 penalty corners compared to MSU’s two. Cassidy also made nine saves, giving her 15 on the whole weekend.

Next weekend, the Spartans open their Big Ten season when they play host to Iowa at 3 p.m. Friday at Ralph Young Field.
