Academic governance bylaws approved

June 20, 2010

The MSU Board of Trustees on Friday approved an updated version of the bylaws that govern academic committee processes at the university.

Although no major changes were implemented, the bylaws have been worked on throughout the last several years, said Harold Hughes, former chair of the Executive Committee of Academic Council.

The revisions, among other things, clarify the roles of students and faculty in Academic Governance and redefine certain governance processes.

“We have discussed it and debated it and made some fine-tuning to it,” Hughes said. “The exercise was beneficial in that we all have more knowledge of how these things are done and therefore more useful to faculty. We’ve taken out some conflicts and some things that were inconsistent, so it should all work better.”

Revision of the bylaws stemmed from conflicts surrounding the approval of the $90 million Secchia Center in Grand Rapids, Hughes said. Some faculty felt they did not have adequate opportunity to discuss and debate the idea.

The bylaws were approved by Faculty Council in March and Academic Council in April before being approved by the board.
