Wharton looks to manage Theater

December 6, 2009

A potential arrangement between Wharton Center and the city of Traverse City is expected to be finalized at a city meeting tonight, which would send some of the center’s programming to Traverse City, a city official said.

Wharton has been negotiating to manage the Traverse City’s City Opera House for more than a year and the City Commissioner will vote on a contract at their 7 p.m. meeting tonight, City Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem Ralph Soffredine said.

The city owns the building and has final say in the change of management, Soffredine said.

The opera house has been operating at a deficit, Soffredine said, and is in the final stages of a $8.5 million restoration project that started about 30 years ago. Soffredine did not comment on the specifics of contract and officials from Wharton Center could not be reached for comment Sunday.
