Women's soccer team rebounds, splits

November 1, 2009

Junior forward Cara Freeman scored on a header in overtime as the MSU women’s soccer team beat Iowa 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Iowa Soccer Complex in Iowa City, Iowa.

Freeman headed the ball past Iowa goalkeeper Emily Moran at the 93:02 minute mark to give the Spartans (10-4-4 overall, 3-4-2 Big Ten) their 10th win of the season.

MSU got an early lead on two first half goals from freshman forward Olivia Stander at the 22:32 minute mark and one from senior forward Lauren Hill in the 42nd minute.

Keli McLaughlin scored for the Hawkeyes (9-9-0, 1-8) early in the second half before Alex Seydel scored on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to tie the game.

The victory against Iowa salvaged a weekend split for the Spartans, who lost 5-0 to Illinois Friday.
