Women's soccer ties Santa Clara

September 4, 2009

Senior forward Lauren Hill scored late in the second half, but Santa Barbara’s Erin Ortega answered minutes later as the MSU women’s soccer team tied Santa Clara, 1-1, Thursday night at Santa Clara.

Neither team scored until Hill, the reigning Co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, followed her own shot and put it inside the left post at the 63:46 mark for a 1-0 MSU lead.

But Ortega scored shortly thereafter, at the 66:24 mark, to tie the game. Each team had one shot a piece in the two overtime sessions.

MSU out-shot the Gauchos 4-3 in the first half, but Santa Barbara had nine shot attempts to the Spartans’ five in the second. Flietstra had four saves, while Hill’s goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.

The Spartans (2-0-1) make their return to DeMartin Stadium at Old College at 1 p.m. Sunday against Central Michigan.
