September 6, 2008

Senior running back Javon Ringer carried the ball 34 times for 135 yards and five touchdowns as the MSU football team picked up their first win of the season, beating Eastern Michigan 42-10 Saturday at Spartan Stadium.

Ringer scored his first touchdown with 1:46 left in the first quarter, capping off a 46-yard drive with a 4-yard run to put the Spartans up 7-0.

Eastern quarterback Andy Schmitt tied the game with a 3-yard quarterback keeper in the first minute of the second quarter, but the Spartans regained the lead minutes later on a 6-yard run by Ringer.

Ringer found paydirt for the third time of the first half, scoring on a 2-yard run with a little more than a minute to go to put the Spartans up 21-7 heading into halftime and give him more than 100 yards in the first half alone.

On their second series of the second half, MSU started at their own 1-yard line after Eastern Michigan failed on a fake field goal attempted. The Spartans got a 29-yard reception by sophomore wide receiver Mark Dell and a 46-yard one-handed grab by freshman wide receiver B.J. Cunningham two plays later to put them inside Eastern’s 10.

Ringer pounded it in from one yard out three plays later to extend MSU’s lead to 28-7.

A 78-yard punt return by senior strong safety Otis Wiley in the early minutes of the fourth quarter put the Spartans inside Eastern Michigan’s 10-yard line and Ringer scored his fifth touchdown of the day on a 2-yard run to put the Spartans up 35-7.

The Spartans took out a majority of the starters during the middle of the fourth quarter, but MSU tacked seven more points on a 4-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Ashton Leggett to make the score 42-7.

Eastern Michigan kicked a 24-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining to put the Eagles for the final margin.

Senior quarterback Brian Hoyer was 8-of-12 passing for 148 yards, while Dell caught three balls for 71 yards. Cunningham two catches for 63 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Eric Gordon led the team with seven tackles, while junior free safety Danny Fortener, starting in the place of injured senior Kendell Davis-Clark, had six.
