Roots exposed in student's clothing

June 8, 2008

Theater senior Princess Souvenir models a skirt made of African mud cloth, a ring and necklace made of Guyanese gold and a bracelet made in South Africa.

The State News caught up with MSU student Princess Souvenir, a theater senior with a specialization in Black American and Diasporic Studies. Souvenir is a native of the Caribbean country Guyana, a fact she displays through her Afrocentric apparel.

Although Guyana isn’t an African country, it has a strong Afrocentric presence via African diaspora — the movement of Africans and their descendants throughout the world. Her daily ensemble, which is an expression of her heritage, is the topic of discussion for today’s SN Style.

The State News How does your style of dress help you express your cultural background?

Princess Souvenir I’ve always been this way, I feel like any piece you wear tells a story of your history.

For instance, the ring I’m wearing is made of Guyanese gold, and I wear a necklace with the map of the Guyanan flag as a charm.

It’s important to me because I was the first person in my family born in America.

SN How important are accessories like those in creating your look?

PS It’s not necessarily important, but it adds a certain pizzazz. I’ll go to an art festival or a gallery and pick out different pieces that have meaning behind them and add (something special) to the outfit.

SN So the expression behind your dress is more important than the fashion itself?

PS Exactly. There are a lot of things I do because of the significance behind it.

(For example), cuffing my dreadlocks has a significance to it that is (overlooked) by people because of (the process) becoming somewhat of a fad. I never put on something and wonder what people will think.

SN What makes an outfit, like the one you’re wearing, click to you?

PS I go for comfort first, then style. I find a wrap, then jewelry, and it comes together from there.

SN You seem focused on wearing matching colors. Is that one of the first things you look for when choosing an outfit?

PS I don’t really go out of my way to match; if it happens, it’s kind of accidental.

SN What is the influence behind your personal style of dress?

PS To be different from everyone else. I strive not to look like the next person on the street.
