According to the schedule, the MSU baseball team plans to make its 2008 home debut Friday at Kobs Field. Mother Nature might have other ideas, however, as of Wednesday, weather.com is forecasting a high of 37 degrees and a chance for snow showers.
Despite the unfavorable forecast, MSU head baseball coach David Grewe is holding out for a chance that his team gets to play this weekend.
“I hope so,” Grewe said. “It’s always day-to-day when you come home in March to play these games.”
The Spartans, who have a 7-8 record, are coming off a series against Quinnipiac in which they took two of three games.
Oakland is 2-9 and their scheduled game for Wednesday against Michigan was postponed because of field conditions. The two teams will try to play today at U-M.
With the home opener just a day away, Grewe said the work he’s had to do on the field the past few days is the reason he enjoys traveling. Still, he acknowledged that the chance to play at home after traveling is nice for the players.
“It’s always great to play at home and sleep in your own bed, dress in your own locker room and try to protect your own turf,” he said.
MSU leaders
The two leading hitters for the Spartans are junior catcher Kyle Day and freshman shortstop Jonathan Roof, who each have knocked out 19 hits. Day is hitting .333 with a team-leading 15 RBIs, and Roof has a .328 batting average with eight RBIs.
On the mound, senior Chris Cullen has been the most efficient starter, going 3-0 with a 3.18 ERA in four starts. Two relievers — freshman Kurt Wunderlich and senior Nolan Moody — also have held opposing batters in check through the season’s first month. Wunderlich has a team-low 2.79 ERA in six appearances, while Moody has a 2-1 record and 3.38 ERA in nine games.
Scouting the Grizzlies
Four Oakland hitters are batting over .300 for a team that averages just more than five runs a game. Infielder Rob Merkle is leading the Grizzlies with a .372 average, while outfielder/pitcher Dustin Joffrion is hitting .273 with 10 RBIs.
The reason for Oakland’s 2-9 start can be found on the mound, as the Grizzlies have a team ERA of 9.87 through 11 games. Only two Oakland pitchers have an ERA under four.
MSU and Oakland’s three-game series begins at 3:05 p.m. Friday and continues at 1:05 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. All games are at Kobs Field.
