Hours of tailgating leading up to the Spartans’ victory Saturday night kept campus police busy this weekend.
Campus police officers made 106 arrests prior to Saturday’s game and 19 arrests after the Spartan victory, for a total of 125 arrests — 114 more than last weekend’s loss to Northwestern.
The arrest count held steady when compared to MSU’s last night game — the September 2006 loss to Notre Dame — when 131 people were arrested.
MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said the night game combined with good weather may have lathered up the Homecoming crowd Saturday, leading to the significant number of arrests.
“I think a lot of this was attributed to this being Homecoming,” McGlothian-Taylor said. “But more so than Homecoming, it being a night game, you have more people that are there and they have more time to consume alcohol.”
Of the 106 arrests made prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, about half of those were made by the Wilson Road tennis courts — home to ASMSU’s student-only tailgate — and Spartan Stadium for minor in possession incidents.
McGlothian-Taylor said not all of those arrested for MIPs were lodged in the department’s jail, though the number of citations issued were not immediately available.
While MSU police were active, East Lansing police reported a quiet patrol given the circumstances surrounding the game. According to the department’s weekend report, a total of 13 arrests were made Saturday — 10 fewer than last year’s night game.
“Although there were a lot of people in the city, the officers said it was quite slow,” East Lansing police Lt. Kevin Daley said. “We always anticipate a busy weekend, but this has been a really good year overall.”
