Weekend explosion shakes Bailey Hall

April 16, 2007

Zoology freshman Sam Goldenberg awoke early Friday morning when he felt the walls and floors of his Bailey Hall dorm room shake, heard a loud thundering noise and saw a piece of concrete fly through his window.

"Because of the rumble, I thought someone had planted explosives in the whole hall," Goldenberg said.

Residents of the hall felt the same rumble after an MSU student threw an explosive device outside the residence hall at about 1 a.m., police said.

"It felt like Bailey Hall was going to fall down because it shook the whole building," Goldenberg said.

A 19-year-old male student was arrested Friday night by MSU police for possessing and igniting explosives, which caused about $150 in damage to the courtyard area outside the hall, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Police have yet to determine why the student possessed explosives or used them, McGlothian-Taylor said.

"I could see a very light flash, and the ground rumbled," predental sophomore Scott Levitz said.

Levitz, who was in Emmons Hall at the time, said the explosion that occurred in the courtyard connecting Bailey and Emmons halls also could be heard from within the neighboring building.

"I was inside at the time, but people came inside later saying they heard it was a half a stick of dynamite that went off," he said.

The type of explosives used by the student has not been confirmed by MSU police.

No one was injured in the incident. Concrete pieces were broken in the courtyard, and a piece of concrete shattered Goldenberg's window.

"The concrete flew through the window, through the screen, put a hole in the window and landed in the fan," Goldenberg said. "We got the (resident mentors), and they had the police come and look at the damage."

The incident in Bailey Hall is still under investigation, McGlothian-Taylor said.
