The Virginia Tech University shooting reminded students of how serious the Bailey Hall explosion last Friday morning could have been.
Some students opinions' of the incident, which was considered a freshman prank changed after the shooting on the Virginia campus.
Psychology freshman Kyle Graff was arrested Friday morning after setting off explosives in the courtyard of Bailey Hall at about 1 a.m.
The explosion, which shook the hall, could be heard in the neighboring Emmons Hall and caused about $150 in damage to the courtyard.
"At first, I thought someone was just playing around with fireworks or something," said Ashley Loudermill, a computer science freshman and Bailey Hall resident. "But after the Virginia Tech thing, I thought they were trying to hurt someone."
The specifics of why Graff used or possessed explosives hasn't been determined, MSU police said.
Students reported they heard a loud, thundering noise, followed by a flash of light as the ground of the hall shook beneath them.
"We got scared and locked the door," chemical engineering freshman Keira Bell said.
Some Bailey residents thought it was thunder or gun shots, she added.
The Virginia Tech shooting also had students question the safety of MSU's campus.
"(Virginia Tech) is pretty open like MSU," graduate student Sara Gubala said.
Gubala, who is from Virginia, said her home is 40 minutes away from the campus.
"When you have a large college campus, how do you secure the dorms and all of the campus? I'm sure they will be looking into those things."
However, some students don't see any comparison between the seriousness and tragedy of the Virginia shooting and the prank bomb in Bailey Hall.
"The thing here was just some kid being stupid," said Lars Zwaanenburg, a mechanical engineering freshman and Bailey Hall resident. "The (Virginia) thing was some crazy kid."
Varun Paranjpe said he would be concerned if something like the Bailey Hall explosion occurred again, however, he wouldn't freak out because it wouldn't be as serious as the Virginia incident.
"After the Virginia Tech shooting, this is a trifle," the supply chain management freshman and Bailey Hall resident said.
Graff has a pretrial scheduled for April 24 and a preliminary hearing April 27 at East Lansing's 54-B District Court, MSU police said.
In a previous bombing incident that occurred on campus in 2004, students faced up to 90 days in jail or a $100 fine.
"If the Virginia shooting had happened first, then I would think (Graff) would be in way more trouble," marketing freshman Roland Morsee said.
