DTN plans Okemos housing project

March 12, 2007

The owner of Cedar Village, Dover's Crossings and Knob Hill apartments is breaking ground on another housing development.

DTN Management Co. is constructing the Hamptons next to Berrytree Apartments, 2950 Whitehall Drive in Okemos, on the corner of Hagadorn and Mount Hope roads, said Colin Cronin, DTN's area director of student properties.

The location is slated to house veterinary and medical students and is planned to be similar to its sister location, the Riverwalk, 232 S. Clippert St. in Lansing.

"It will be about 1,200 square feet, similar to Knob Hill but a little more isolated," Cronin said.

Hagadorn Road is dotted with residential homes to the east and farms to the west.

The Hamptons will contain apartments with three bedrooms and have commercial space on the first floor, Cronin said. The space could house student-oriented businesses.

"We're hoping for a Beaner's or Panera Bread," Cronin said. "You can live upstairs and do a little shopping downstairs."

DTN has spoken with commercial groups interested in moving into the property. However, Cronin said it won't realistically be ready until spring 2008 and that renters shouldn't expect to move in until August 2008.

A rough estimate of how much the apartments will cost is about $495 per bedroom and would include a stackable washer and dryer in the apartment, Cronin said.

Sometimes when choosing an apartment, it's the little things that matter. This is the case for some students, including Kristin Magruder.

"On college campuses, sometimes it's hard to find a clean place," the human biology freshman said, adding that she's looking into renting a DTN apartment because they appear to be clean.
